De Wallen is the Dutch name for Amsterdam's oldest quarter, the lanes around the Oude Kerk known abroad as the red light district, and a frequent outcall address.
Locals seldom say red light district. They say De Wallen, or De Walletjes, a name drawn from the old walls and quays lining the canals that run through the medieval heart of the city. The quarter is small: a few blocks either side of the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and the Oudezijds Achterburgwal, the Oude Kerk at its centre, the Zeedijk curving along one edge and the Nieuwmarkt opening out at the other.
Few corners of Amsterdam change so completely between eight in the evening and four in the morning. Early on, the lanes fill with stag groups, sightseers and people who came only to look. Once the bars close, the crowd drains away fast and the quarter returns to what it also is: a residential neighbourhood of narrow houses, bikes chained to bridge railings and dark water holding the last reflections of the neon.
Hotels in and around De Wallen tend to be small, often a canal house divided into a handful of rooms, sometimes above a bar, frequently without anyone at a desk through the night. For an outcall booking that shapes the practical details far more than the price. Tell the thread whether the street door locks after a certain hour, how your room is reached, and a landmark such as the nearest bridge, because house numbers along these canals are easy to misread in the dark.
Nothing at all. There is no window, no studio and no door belonging to the house anywhere in the quarter. A booking from a room in De Wallen works exactly like one from anywhere else central: the same ladder, the same forty to sixty minutes, the same thread. The only difference is that you are sleeping inside the part of the city whose reputation brought many visitors to Amsterdam in the first place.
