Hotels are where most of our evenings end. Visitors to Amsterdam rarely have anywhere else to receive a guest, and a hotel room, with its clean sheets, its heating and its door that locks, is in many ways the ideal setting for an unhurried hour. Step five: the door, the payment and the hour

The rate is €180 per hour, €360 for two hours, €540 for three, and €1,250 for the eight-hour night; a booking with two women is €360 per hour. Plenty of guests write from the train in from the airport, from a taxi on the A10 ring road or from a restaurant table, giving the hotel name and the time they expect to be in the room. The confirmation can be timed to your check-in rather than to the moment you wrote, and she sets off once you say you have your key. If reception is slow or the room is not ready, send a line and the arrival window moves with you. The one thing to avoid is booking to a hotel you have not actually confirmed yet, since a late switch of property on a busy weekend can mean a longer crossing than the one first quoted.
When plans change
Meetings overrun, dinners take longer, flights are delayed. If your timing changes, simply write in the same thread as early as you can. The standard arrival time applies to every hotel in central Amsterdam, from the old centre and the Red Light District through the canal ring, Leidseplein, Rembrandtplein, Oud-Zuid, De Pijp and Zuidas. Airport hotels at Schiphol are arranged individually, because the journey depends heavily on the time of night. Begin your message with the word Schiphol and the name of your hotel, and the reply will include a realistic arrival time for that particular booking.
Five small mistakes to avoid
- Giving the hotel's chain name without the location, when the chain has three hotels in the city.
- Falling asleep after the shower and missing the message asking for your room number.
- Forgetting to mention a locked street door or keycard lift, which adds a few minutes of confusion outside.
- Booking a single hour directly before a restaurant reservation and spending the session thinking about the table.
