The forty-five are not garrisoned in one building somewhere, they live where they live, spread through four districts, and each goes out from her own front door. This is the machinery behind our half-hour promise, but it is also, for the guest who thinks about it, a quiet advantage: the nearest excellent woman is a knowable fact, and we can see it from the thread.
The Jordaan holds about a quarter of the roster, up steep staircases in the narrow streets west of the grachten. From there the canal-belt hotels are a short walk and the whole western centre is inside twenty minutes. The old centreCentrum proper, Dam to Nieuwmarkt, houses the largest contingent, closest to the big hotels and fastest to reach them, at home among crowds and late noise and lobbies of every temperature.
Oud-Zuid is the museum quarter's calm grid, and its women serve the grand addresses along the park and the Apollolaan with the shortest ride in the city. De Pijpacross the ring to the south-east, covers its own lively streets plus the southern hotels, and its contingent are used to apartments as much as suites, worth knowing if your bed this month is a rental with a fourth-floor walk-up.
You do not need to study anything; you need one habit. When you write, lead with where you are, and if two women both appeal, say so and ask who is closer tonight. Distance inside the ring is never large, the far corner of the city is still only the far side of half an hour, but at two in the morning, the difference between a woman four bridges away and one across the water is the difference between finishing your drink and ordering another.
