The streets at night
Oost keeps a neighbourhood rhythm rather than a nightlife one. The market packs up by late afternoon, the cafés around the Javaplein and the Linnaeusstraat stay busy until eleven or so, and then the streets settle into a residential hush broken by the last trams. The park gates stand open, but the Oosterpark after dark belongs to cyclists taking a shortcut. Out on the docklands piers the mood changes again: wide quays, wind off the IJ and long views across the water from apartments whose fronts are almost entirely glass. That glass deserves a thought, since a lit room on Borneo-Sporenburg faces the houses across the basin at close range, and a blind should come down before the knock. Older blocks near the park have narrow shared stairwells and doorbells with handwritten name tags; the new builds have intercoms and lifts. Either way, she messages from the street and you let her in, just as you would welcome a friend arriving for a late drink. On Koningsdag and on summer festival weekends in the eastern parks, music carries late into the night, so mention it if your booking falls on one.
