Once a year, on the 27th of April, or the 26th when that date lands on a Sunday, Amsterdam turns orange. The canals fill with boats playing music at one another, the pavements become one enormous flea market, and hundreds of thousands of extra people pour into a centre that is crowded on an ordinary Saturday. It is one of the best days of the year to be in the city. It is also the day when an erotic massage on King's Day needs more planning than any other booking on the calendar. Nothing closes on our side, since the house runs as it always does; the challenge is simply getting through the streets.
What changes in the streets
From the evening before, known locally as King's Night, the centre starts to swell. By late morning on the day itself, the canal ring, the Jordaan and the lanes around Dam Square are packed shoulder to shoulder, trams are diverted or suspended through the core, and every bridge becomes a grandstand for the boats passing beneath it. The usual twenty to thirty minutes can stretch when the last three hundred metres run through a dancing crowd in orange wigs.
Erotic massage on King's Day: the best hours
- Early morning, before ten. The crowds are still asleep or spreading their blankets on the pavement. Arrival is smooth, the hotel is quiet, and you walk out into the party afterwards feeling superb.
- Mid-afternoon, away from the core. Guests staying in Oud-Zuid, Zuidas or further out often find the afternoon perfectly workable, because the densest crowds gather in the old centre and the Jordaan.
- After the party, late evening. The day winds down from around eight, the streets clear surprisingly fast, and by eleven the city is tired and calm. This is the most requested window of the whole day.
The hardest slot is early afternoon anywhere inside the canal ring, when the crowds peak and even locals give up on crossing town. If that is when you want her, expect some delay and plan the rest of your afternoon around it.
Book ahead, for once
On most nights, writing an hour beforehand works perfectly. King's Day is one of the exceptions, along with King's Night the evening before. Hotels are full and the late-evening slot is in heavy demand, so messaging a day or two early is sensible, above all if you want a particular woman or two women together. Our post on booking an erotic massage in advance lists the other periods where the same advice applies.
Give her a precise address
On an ordinary night, the name of your hotel and a room number are enough. On King's Day, streets are blocked by stalls, entrances disappear behind crowds, and some hotels steer visitors to a side door to keep the lobby clear. Send the street, the nearest bridge or landmark, and which entrance to use. If the main doors are shut for the day, come down and meet her. A clear message saves ten minutes of searching through a sea of orange.
The drinks question, again
King's Day is a celebration that begins at breakfast, and plenty of guests are several beers in by noon. That rarely combines well with a massage booked for the evening. If the late slot is the plan, pace yourself through the afternoon, eat properly, and leave an hour of water and a shower between the party and the knock. Our post on erotic massage after drinks explains why the difference shows in the hour itself.
Staying in the thick of it
Guests whose hotels sit right on the canals or near the Dam get the best view of the party and the noisiest rooms. That is no obstacle to a massage, but it helps to shut the windows, draw the curtains and accept that a boat with a sound system may drift past at an inconvenient moment. Earlier and later slots are quieter in these rooms; the hours either side of mid-afternoon are loud in any room facing the water.
Paying on a cash-heavy day
The street markets run largely on coins and small notes, and the queues at cash machines in the centre grow long by midday. If you mean to pay in cash, withdraw it the day before. Otherwise card and crypto work exactly as they do on any other night, and nothing about the rate changes: €180 an hour, even on the busiest day of the Amsterdam year.
The orange hour
There is something particular about a massage on this day. The city outside is loud, bright and entirely unrestrained; inside, the curtain is drawn, the oil is warm, and the only music is whatever drifts up from the canal. Guests who have tried it tend to book the same slot the following April. Just give yourself, and her, the extra margin the day demands. Every guest, as ever, must be twenty-one or older, orange wig or not.
