Where it comes from
Synchronised massage by two practitioners is older than the spa industry. Ayurvedic tradition in India describes a four-handed oil massage in which two therapists work in exact rhythm down both sides of the body, and Hawaiian lomi lomi, with its long flowing forearm strokes, lends itself so naturally to a pair that spa menus now sell it that way. Luxury hotels of the late twentieth century rediscovered both ideas and placed four-hand sessions at the top of their price lists as the ultimate indulgence.
